Soulja Boy, also known as DeAndre Cortez Way, was born in Chicago and then moved to Atlanta, Georgia, when he was six. This is where at the age of 6, he became interested in rap music. Later, at age14, he moved to Batesville, Mississippi where his father provided a home recording studio and encouraged him to pursue music. In November 2005, Soulja Boy began uploading his songs and lyrics on the website SoundClick. Determined to get his music career off the ground, he later posted his music to MySpace and YouTube. At the age of 16, in May 2007, Soulja Boy signed with Interscope Records.

In February 2009, Soulja Boy challenged rapper Bow Wow to a race in their Lamborghinis they both owned. Soulja Boy claimed Bow Wow’s car was rented, Bow Wow took umbrage which turned into a Twitter feud. The whole beef escalated, with the rappers sending diss songs and calling each other out in various videos. Both rappers eventually settled their difference and reunited in 2016, to release a collaborative mixtape called “Ignorant Shit.”

In April 2013, Soulja Boy took to Facebook and sent rapper Chief Keef several death threats. Soulja Boy kept posting about coming for him armed with a gun and eventually Keef told him he was in London. Soulja Boy claimed he had not posted anything and his email and social media accounts were hacked. Later the two resolved their differences.

On October 7, 2009, rapper Soulja Boy was charged with obstruction and arrested after a vacant house video shoot in Atlanta, Georgia.
